Coming Out in Middle School

inthefade:

cleversimon:

I cannot fathom the courage of these children.

From what I’ve seen, it’s getting easier for kids to come out and they are coming out early. While they are not always accepted by their family, there is a much bigger acceptance of gay kids in schools now.

When my daughter was in middle school, two of her friends came out. I was amazed at how matter of fact these kids were about it. In high school, my daughter joined the Gay Straight Alliance. This was one of the most popular clubs in school. The support these kids have for each other is amazing. It encourages other students to come out, and the bonds formed in the group give some of the kids strength to come out to their parents.

When my daughter’s father (my ex husband) asked her “Why the hell would you belong to such a club?” she deadpanned at him “Because of people like you.”

I can’t imagine how hard it is to come out, but if you have the support of most of your peers - a whole school-sanctioned club dedicated to gay rights and the support of gay classmates - that’s got to make a difference.
